Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a urological operation used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, performed by visualizing the prostate through the urethra and removing tissue by electrocautery or sharp dissection. It has long been the standard treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, though alternative minimally invasive techniques have more recently become available, and the outcome is considered excellent for 80 to 90 percent of patients.
