Urinary Catheterization

Surgical Procedure

Urinary catheterization is the insertion of a latex, polyurethane, or silicone tube, known as a urinary catheter, into the bladder through the urethra to allow urine to drain for collection. It may also be used to inject liquids for the treatment or diagnosis of bladder conditions. A clinician, often a nurse, usually performs the procedure, though self catheterization is also possible, and a catheter may remain in place for long periods or be removed after each use.
