Angiography, also called arteriography, is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside, or lumen, of blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in the arteries, veins and the heart chambers. Modern angiography is performed by injecting a radio opaque contrast agent into the blood vessel of interest and imaging it with an X-ray based technique such as fluoroscopy. The resulting image is called an angiograph or angiogram, and the terms angiogram and arteriogram are often used interchangeably in practice. The name derives from Greek roots meaning vessel and to write or record.
