Cardiac Contractility Modulation

Cardiac contractility modulation is a therapy for patients with moderate to severe heart failure who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy and who could benefit from improved cardiac output. It works by using a pacemaker-like device that applies non-excitatory electrical signals timed to the electrical action of the cardiac cycle, enhancing the strength of ventricular contraction without directly affecting cardiac rhythm or increasing the heart's oxygen demand. The therapy, delivered through the OPTIMIZER Smart System device, received United States Food and Drug Administration approval on March 21, 2019, based on the FIX-HF-5C trial.
