Cardiomyoplasty is a surgical procedure in which healthy muscle, most often the latissimus dorsi, is taken from elsewhere in the body and wrapped around a failing heart to provide it with mechanical support. A special pacemaker is implanted to make the wrapped skeletal muscle contract in time with the heart. When successful, cardiomyoplasty usually serves as a bridging therapy, buying time for the damaged heart muscle to be treated through other means, such as cellular remodeling therapies.
