A commissurotomy is a surgical incision made at a commissure, a natural junction in the body, such as the point where cardiac valve leaflets meet, or a corresponding structure in the brain treated for certain psychiatric disorders. Patients with scleroderma, a disease that thickens and hardens the skin, sometimes require an oral commissurotomy to open the corners of the mouth for dental treatment, a procedure that often leaves characteristic scars.
