The Cox maze procedure, also known simply as the maze procedure, is a type of heart surgery used to treat atrial fibrillation. Its name refers to the series of incisions arranged in a maze like pattern across the heart's atria, which are intended to interrupt the abnormal electrical circuits that sustain the arrhythmia. A range of minimally invasive methods derived from the original operation, collectively called minimaze procedures, are also used today.
