Heart valve replacement is the surgical replacement of one or more of the heart's valves with either a mechanical artificial valve or a bioprosthetic valve made from human or animal tissue, most often from a pig or a cow. It is performed when a diseased or damaged valve can no longer be repaired, and serves as an alternative to valve repair surgery.
