A phlebectomy, or vein stripping, is a surgical procedure done under general or local anesthetic to aid in the treatment of varicose veins and other manifestations of chronic venous disease. The vein stripped is usually the great saphenous vein, and the surgery involves making incisions, inserting a wire into the vein, attaching the vein to the wire and pulling it out from the body before the incisions are stitched and pressure dressings applied.
