The Rastelli procedure is an open heart surgical intervention developed by Italian cardiac surgeon Giancarlo Rastelli in 1967 at the Mayo Clinic, used to correct certain combinations of congenital heart defects such as transposition of the great arteries or double outlet right ventricle paired with a ventricular septal defect and an obstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract, using a pulmonary or aortic homograft conduit to relieve the obstruction. The first successful Rastelli operation was performed on July 26, 1968, at the Mayo Clinic by Robert Wallace, and the procedure is typically carried out in children between one and two years of age, often after an initial palliative Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt.
