Valve sparing aortic root replacement, also called the David procedure, is a cardiac surgical intervention used to manage aortic aneurysms and prevent aortic dissection by replacing the aortic root while preserving the patient's own natural aortic valve, distinguishing it from procedures that require replacing the valve itself. It treats patients with aortic aneurysms and those at risk of aortic dissection, and it was developed independently by Sir Magdi Yacoub and Tirone David, whose names are attached to two distinct surgical approaches; because the native valve is preserved, patients who undergo it do not have to rely on anticoagulants afterward.
