Venography, also called phlebography or ascending phlebography, is a procedure in which an X-ray of the veins, called a venogram, is taken after a special dye is injected into the bone marrow or the veins. Because the dye must be continuously administered through a catheter, venography is an invasive procedure; the catheter is typically inserted through the groin and navigated through the vascular system to reach the vein under examination.
