A ventricular assist device, or VAD, is an electromechanical device that provides support for the heart's pumping function, used either to partially or completely replace the function of a failing heart. Ventricular assist devices can be used in patients with either acute, or sudden onset, or chronic, or long standing, heart failure, which can occur as a result of coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, valvular disease and other conditions.
