Periodontal surgery is a form of dental surgery that prevents or corrects anatomical, traumatic, developmental or plaque-induced defects in the bone, gingiva or alveolar mucosa. Its objectives include giving instruments access to the root surface, eliminating inflammation, creating an oral environment suited to plaque control, controlling periodontal disease, maintaining oral hygiene and proper embrasure space, addressing problems where the gingiva meets the alveolar mucosa, and improving appearance.
