Alveoloplasty is a surgical pre-prosthetic procedure that reshapes and smooths the alveolar bone of the jaw, most often to prepare the mouth for dentures or dental implants after teeth are removed. Bone contouring of this kind was first described by Willard in 1853, and in 1919 Armin Wald of New York was among the first to successfully perform and publish the modern technique. The procedure removes bony irregularities left after tooth extraction so that a prosthetic device has a smooth, well supported surface to rest on.
