A dental implant is a prosthesis that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or denture, or to act as an orthodontic anchor. It relies on osseointegration, a biological process in which a material such as titanium or zirconia forms an intimate bond to the bone; the implant fixture is placed first and allowed to osseointegrate before the dental prosthetic is attached.
