A Le Fort osteotomy is any of three types of surgical bone cuts of the jaw and midface, named for French surgeon Rene Le Fort based on the patterns in which the facial bones fracture. Le Fort I repositions the upper jaw and is used to correct malocclusion and cleft palate related deformities, Le Fort II addresses fractures of the maxilla, and Le Fort III treats more extensive midfacial abnormalities. The classification and the operations built on it remain a standard part of orthognathic and craniofacial surgery.
