Incision and drainage, also called clinical lancing, is a minor surgical procedure used to relieve a buildup of pus or pressure under the skin, most often from an abscess, a boil, or an infected paranasal sinus. After the skin is cleaned with an antiseptic, a clinician makes a small incision with a sterile needle or scalpel so the accumulated pus can drain out. For a larger abdominal abscess, a drainage tube is placed instead of a simple incision, with a central line often set up beforehand in case of complications such as septic shock.
