Biopsy

Surgical Procedure

A biopsy is a medical test commonly performed by surgeons, interventional radiologists, interventional cardiologists, dermatologists, gynecologists, pulmonologists, urologists, ophthalmologists, internists, family physicians, otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, podiatrists and dentists, involving the extraction of sample cells or tissue for examination to determine the presence or extent of a disease. The tissue may be fixed, dehydrated, embedded, sectioned, stained and mounted before examination under a microscope by a pathologist, or analyzed chemically; an excisional biopsy removes an entire lump or suspicious area, incisional and core biopsies sample a portion of abnormal tissue, a fine needle aspiration biopsy removes cells with a needle without preserving tissue architecture, and other types include punch and shave biopsies, most commonly performed for insight into possible cancerous or inflammatory conditions.

FAQs

Does a biopsy always mean a doctor suspects cancer?

A biopsy checks cells or tissue for damage or disease. It is the only sure test for cancer in most cases, but it is also done for many other reasons.

No. A biopsy removes cells or tissue from the body so that a doctor called a pathologist can look at them under a microscope to check for damage or disease. MedlinePlus notes that in most cases a biopsy is the only test that can tell for sure if a suspicious area is cancer, but that biopsies are performed for many other reasons too. They can be done on all parts of the body. A needle biopsy removes tissue with a needle passed through the skin to the site of the problem, while other kinds of biopsies may require surgery.
