Cricopharyngeal myotomy is a surgical sectioning of the cricopharyngeus muscle, also known as the upper esophageal sphincter, advocated for treating cricopharyngeal spasm, or cricopharyngeal achalasia, that leads to cervical dysphagia. The surgery can also be used to treat retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction, a condition that causes the inability to burp.
