A bowel resection, or enterectomy, is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the small or large intestine is removed. It may be performed to treat gastrointestinal cancer, bowel ischemia, tissue death, or obstruction caused by scar tissue, volvulus, or hernias. Some patients require an ileostomy or colostomy afterward as an alternative means of elimination, and depending on how much intestine is removed, the procedure can leave lasting digestive and metabolic challenges such as short bowel syndrome; possible complications include anastomotic leakage, hernias, and adhesions causing bowel obstruction.
