Fistulectomy is a surgical procedure in which a fistula, an abnormal tract connecting two body cavities, is completely removed, in contrast to a fistulotomy, which only cuts the tract open, or seton placement, which leaves a drain in place. It is most often performed by colorectal surgeons for anorectal fistulas, though the more radical removal can risk damage to the anal sphincter, which is why it is no longer considered the standard approach.
