Aneurysm clipping is a neurosurgical procedure that places a small metal clip across the base of a cerebral aneurysm, sealing it off from normal blood flow to prevent it from rupturing or bleeding again. The clip, typically made of titanium, is applied permanently with a specialized applicator during open brain surgery, a more invasive alternative to endovascular coiling. The technique traces to the surgical clips introduced by Harvey Cushing in 1911 and was developed specifically for cerebral aneurysms by Walter Dandy in 1937.
