Epineurial Repair

Epineurial repair is a common surgical procedure to repair a nerve laceration through the epineurium, the connective tissue surrounding the nerve fibers that originate from the spinal cord. Surgeons suture the severed ends of the nerve through the epineurium so that the proximal portion can regrow along the pathway left by the degrading distal segment, restoring sensory capability. Because nerves grow at a rate of about one millimeter per day, it takes a few months to see the final outcome, and current research explores nerve grafts and growth factors as ways to accelerate healing.
