Neurectomy

A neurectomy, or nerve resection, is a neurosurgical procedure in which a peripheral nerve is cut or removed to relieve neuropathic pain or to permanently disable some function of the nerve, preventing the nerve from regrowing. Beyond pain relief, neurectomy is also used to address autonomic problems such as excessive sweating and involuntary muscle movement, and sensory problems such as vertigo caused by a vestibular nerve disorder. A nerve block with anesthetic is typically performed before surgery to confirm that cutting the nerve will help.
