Spinal cord stimulation uses an implanted neuromodulation device, sometimes called a pain pacemaker, to send electrical signals to the dorsal columns of the spinal cord for the treatment of certain chronic pain conditions. The first device was implanted by Shealy and colleagues in the 1960s, and the analgesic effect of epidural spinal cord stimulation was reported by Shimoji and colleagues in 1971.
