Ventriculostomy is a neurosurgical procedure that creates a hole within a cerebral ventricle for drainage, most commonly performed on those with hydrocephalus, by surgically penetrating the skull, dura mater and brain to access the ventricular system. When the catheter drainage is temporary it is called an external ventricular drain, and when permanent it is usually called a ventricular shunt.
