Arthrocentesis, or joint aspiration, is a clinical procedure performed to diagnose and, in some cases, treat musculoskeletal conditions, using a syringe to withdraw synovial fluid from a joint or inject medication into the joint capsule. Laboratory analysis of the withdrawn fluid can help distinguish between gout, arthritis and synovial infections such as septic arthritis.
