Arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgical procedure in which the articular surface of a musculoskeletal joint is replaced, remodeled, or realigned, whether by osteotomy or another technique. It is generally an elective operation performed to relieve pain and restore function in a joint damaged by arthritis or trauma. The term covers the general surgical concept from which specific joint procedures, such as hip, knee and shoulder replacement, are derived.
