Arthrotomy is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon creates an opening directly into a joint. The incision exposes the joint cavity itself, and the procedure is used chiefly for drainage of the joint space, for example to relieve a joint that has become infected or has accumulated excess fluid. It is a general surgical technique that can be applied to many joints in the body rather than a single named operation confined to one joint.
