Autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane

Autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane, marketed as Maci, is a treatment approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to correct symptomatic, full-thickness cartilage defects of the knee, with or without underlying bone involvement, in adults. Healthy cartilage cells taken from the patient's own knee are grown onto a collagen scaffold, which is then surgically implanted at the defect site in a procedure known as autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis; because the transplanted tissue comes from the same patient, the technique avoids the risk of tissue rejection.
