Bankart repair is a surgical procedure that treats recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation caused by a Bankart lesion, a tear of the anterior glenoid labrum first described by British surgeon Arthur Sydney Blundell Bankart in 1923. During the procedure the torn joint capsule is sewn to the detached labrum, restoring the anatomic barrier that keeps the head of the upper arm bone seated in the shoulder socket. It can be performed arthroscopically or as an open operation and is one of the standard treatments for shoulder instability following dislocation.
