A bursectomy is the surgical removal of a bursa, a fluid filled sac that cushions bone near a joint, performed to relieve chronic inflammation or infection once conservative treatment has failed. It is most often carried out at the elbow, kneecap, shoulder or hip, either through an open incision or, increasingly, through minimally invasive arthroscopic or endoscopic techniques.
