A cheilectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the bone spurs that form at the base of the big toe in hallux rigidus, a form of arthritis of that joint that causes pain and stiffness. Removing the spurs, whose Greek-derived name means lip of bone, eases pain and reduces stiffness in the toe.
