Distraction osteogenesis, also called callus distraction or osteodistraction, is a surgical procedure used in orthopedic surgery, podiatric surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery to repair skeletal deformities and lengthen bone as part of reconstructive surgery. The technique works by cutting the bone and then slowly separating the two segments over time, allowing the body's own bone healing process to fill the resulting gap with new bone tissue.
