High Tibial Osteotomy

High tibial osteotomy is an orthopaedic surgical procedure that corrects a varus deformity accompanied by compartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. The operation realigns the knee's weight-bearing line so that the load produced by standing and walking is shifted away from the arthritic medial compartment toward the healthier lateral compartment, reducing pain and slowing the progression of arthritis in the affected area. Advances in surgical technique and fixation devices have made the procedure increasingly common among younger, more active patients.
