The Ilizarov apparatus is a type of external fixation device used in orthopedic surgery to lengthen or reshape damaged bones of an arm or leg. It functions as a limb-sparing technique for treating complex and open bone fractures and for treating an infected non-union of bone that cannot be resolved by other surgical means, and it can correct angular deformity in a limb and differences in leg length. Later refinements of the device led to the development of the Taylor Spatial Frame.
