Intervertebral disc annuloplasty is any procedure aimed at repairing the annulus of a bulging intervertebral disc before it herniates. One method, intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty, is a minimally invasive technique in which a hollow needle is inserted into the affected disc and a heating wire passed through it is heated to about ninety degrees Celsius for roughly fifteen minutes, sealing ruptures in the disc wall and potentially deadening nearby nerve endings to reduce pain.
