Joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is an orthopedic surgical procedure in which a dysfunctional or arthritic joint surface is replaced with a prosthesis. It is generally considered when severe joint pain or dysfunction is not relieved by less invasive therapies, and is most often indicated by conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Hip and knee replacements are the most common forms of the procedure; roughly 773,000 Americans had a hip or knee replaced in 2009.
