Minimally invasive thoracic spinal fusion is one approach to scoliosis surgery. Rather than a vertical scar down the back or a horizontal scar from the middle of the chest to the center of the back, a rod is inserted through a series of small incisions on the side of the body, and the spine is not exposed during the operation because a small scope is used instead.
