Total disc replacement, also called artificial disc replacement, is a type of arthroplasty in which a degenerated intervertebral disc in the lumbar or cervical spine is replaced with an artificial disc implant. It is used to treat chronic, severe low back or neck pain caused by degenerative disc disease, and can also be an option for symptomatic disc herniation with associated arm or leg pain. It was developed as an alternative to spinal fusion, with the goal of reducing pain while preserving motion through the affected part of the spine, and may lower the risk of premature breakdown at adjacent spinal levels compared with fusion surgery.
