Lung volume reduction surgery removes damaged, over-inflated lung tissue from a patient with emphysema, a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, so that the remaining healthier lung tissue can expand and function more effectively. It is considered for patients whose emphysema has not responded adequately to medication, oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation, and is intended to improve breathing and quality of life rather than to cure the underlying disease.
