Eclampsia is the onset of seizures in a pregnant woman with pre-eclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy presenting with new onset of high blood pressure, large amounts of protein in the urine or other organ dysfunction, and edema. Untreated, pre-eclampsia can result in long-term consequences including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and in more severe cases eclampsia may be fatal for both the pregnant woman and the fetus.
