A sympathectomy is an irreversible surgical procedure in which at least one sympathetic ganglion is removed. One example is lumbar sympathectomy, used for occlusive arterial disease, in which the L2 and L3 ganglia and the intervening sympathetic trunk are removed while the L1 ganglion is left intact, and another example is endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.
