Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue, called the mesothelium, that covers many of the body's internal organs, most often the lining of the lungs and chest wall. Symptoms can include shortness of breath from fluid accumulating around the lung, a swollen abdomen, chest wall pain, cough, fatigue, and weight loss, and they typically develop slowly. More than eighty percent of cases are linked to prior exposure to asbestos, often occurring decades after the exposure took place.
