Mycetoma is a chronic skin infection caused by either bacteria, in a form called actinomycetoma, or fungi, in a form called eumycetoma, and it typically produces a combination of painless firm skin lumps, sinuses that weep fluid, and a discharge containing visible grains. About eighty percent of cases occur in the feet. The infection can take anywhere from a few months to several decades to progress to the point that a person seeks medical attention, and it is more likely to develop in people with a weakened immune system.
