Salmonellosis is an infection caused by bacteria of the genus Salmonella and is one of the most common causes of what is broadly called food poisoning. It typically produces diarrhea along with other gastrointestinal symptoms after bacteria are ingested through contaminated food or water. The bacteria enter the body through the digestive tract, and illness usually develops within a day or two of exposure.
