Agnivesha was an ancient sage credited as one of the earliest systematizers of Ayurveda, the traditional medical science of India. He studied under the physician Atreya Punarvasu and, according to tradition, was the most accomplished among six pupils asked to compose a medical treatise from their teacher's teaching. His resulting work, the Agnivesha Samhita, organized diagnosis, physiology and treatment into a structured text and became the base document later redacted and expanded by Charaka into the Charaka Samhita, still one of Ayurveda's foundational works today. Agnivesha is also named as the founder of one of the six early schools of Ayurvedic thought. His original treatise does not survive intact, but its structure and content are known mainly through Charaka's redaction, and he is honored in the Ayurvedic tradition as a formative figure in codifying medical knowledge.
