Dr. Mutulu Shakur Sr. (born Jeral Wayne Williams, 1950-2023) was an American acupuncturist and activist. Beginning in 1970 he worked with the Lincoln Detox program in the Bronx, which offered drug rehabilitation for heroin addiction using acupuncture, eventually becoming its assistant director, and he went on to help found and direct the Black Acupuncture Advisory Association of North America and the Harlem Institute of Acupuncture. Shakur was also a member of the Black Liberation Army and was sentenced to sixty years in prison for his alleged involvement in a 1981 armored truck robbery in which a guard and two police officers were killed; he was paroled on compassionate grounds in December 2022 and died of cancer in 2023.
