Dry needling, also known as trigger point dry needling and intramuscular stimulation, is a treatment technique used by physical therapists, physicians, chiropractors, and other healthcare practitioners to relieve muscle pain, particularly pain related to myofascial trigger points. It uses solid filiform needles or hollow core hypodermic needles inserted into muscle and connective tissue, and is also used to address neural and other muscular ailments. Acupuncturists often describe it as adapted from acupuncture, while others regard it as a variation of trigger point injection; the American Physical Therapy Association defines it as a technique for treating dysfunction of skeletal muscle and connective tissue, minimizing pain, and improving or regulating structural or functional impairment.
